A Busy Week in St Abban’s
In an extremely busy week for the club, athletes were representing the club on a number of front across the week. On Monday, St Abbans hosted the Annual Open Sports where large crowds descended on Monavea for a great day of competition. 30 different clubs travelled from around the country, with Ferrybank A.C claiming the Monavea Shield for best club on the day.
There was a day’s rest then before the St Abbans Fit4Life League with a trip to Luggacurran. Once again, Pop Up races provided timing facilities for the event and there were 145 finishers in the first of the 6 stage League. Many thanks to James and everyone in Luggarcurran who always put on a great spread for athletes after the race. Mackenzie McIvor led the field home in 13:42 while Paula Guinan was the first lady home in 16:14.
Next up, we had a number of athletes travel to the Belfast International Milers Club meet held in Mary Peter’s Track Belfast. Jack Fenlon continued his blistering start to the 2024 Track season where he ran another PB and World U 20 Standard over 3k this time. Jack’s time of 8:05 was a new Pb and backs up his World U20 5k standard which he ran two weeks ago. Cian Kelly also finished the day with a new Pb when he ran 3:49 in the ‘A’ 1500m. Cian finished in 7th in the race but has ran two PB’s back to back already this year. Cheryl Nolan opened her 2024 Track Season with a new PB over 3km. Cheryl finished 2nd in the Women’s 3k in 9:18. Niall Harvey was the final athlete in action and he also ran a new Pb of 4:03 in the Men’s 1500m. It was a very successful trip up North and sets these athletes up well for the rest of the summer.
The week was brought to a close then when the club hosted the County Track and Field Championships at the Track. The club was awash with green, white and gold as athletes battled with the other clubs in Laois for honours. The club had almost one hundred athletes in action throughout the day with plenty of County medals won by St Abbans athletes. Many thanks to all the coaches and parents who help prepare these young athletes for competitions. We look forward to the action taking place over the rest of the summer.
